What is the difference between panic attacks and panic disorder?

When a person suffers a sudden intense period of anxiety, physical symptoms such as sweating, increased heart rate, stomach cramps and discomfort we call it a panic attack.

All of us experience fear at some point in our lives but we learn to control it and know most times it will pass. When people experience a panic attack, the symptoms are also accompaniced by the fear of impending death.

A true panic attack consists of physical symptoms and cognitive symptoms. As well as a rapid heart beat and sweating they can feel chest tightness and like they are having a heart atttack. They also feel there is no escape and that they are going crazy and will die.

A panic attack can be a one off experience but if it becomes recurrent and the person is worried about having further attacks, the consequences of further attacks and that they are going to die, it is called panic disorder.

The main difference is the way a panic attack is triggered. Normal panic attacks are triggered by something like fear of flying, fear of public speaking, fear of open spaces and so on. Panic disorder is usually not triggered by stimuli, rather driving in a car, eating or even waking up from sleep with a panic attack.

Whilst panic attacks and panic disorder are very unpleasant, you will not die from a panic attack. If they are ongoing though, you must seek medical attention beacuse the sympotoms do resemble life threatening conditions.
A normal panic attack lasts about 10 minutes then subsides in up to 1 hour.

Panic disorder treatment may include behavioural therapy and cognitive therapy to control irrational thoughts. It may include temporary medication to allow symptoms to be controlled whilst the person learns to control their breathing and their thoughts. The longer it is left untreated the worse it gets. So if you do have symptoms, seek help early. Treatment is very effective and works quickly.

Positive Thinking is a crucial part of beating panic attacks.

You need to replace negative thoughts with an abundance of positive thoughts. Every panic sufferer knows they find themselves in a downward spiral of fear and negativity more often than not. As negative thoughts pop up during your daily life, you issue a “stop” command which acts to stop the negative thought in its tracks.

Once the unnecessary, negative or burdensome thought is stopped, you immediately redirect your mind to a more positive thought about the situation you are confronting.

The process of redirecting your thoughts is an important component of successfully using this process. However, the challenge is following through because when you are under pressure from the potential anxiety you are facing, it is hard to redirect your thoughts to a more positive framework because you can´t think of anything positive.

As a beginner, what I suggest is to create a list of positive thoughts that you can use. Write down a list and keep it handy. Then your mind wont be blank at the time you need it most.

Here are some examples of positive thoughts:

1.	I have been anxious before and have survived
2.	I am a wonderful person with great talents and gifts
3.	I am in control of my anxiety and it will not control me
4.	I will have a great time at work/the party
5.	I am safe and feel loved and valued
6.	I am looking forward to …..

Keep going with this list and make it specific towards you. Think about the situations you have coming up that you may feel anxious about. Think of all the positive outcomes that might happen. Force yourself to feel happy and confident when you visualize them. Do not for one minute allow yourself to spend any time thinking about having an attack or feeling anxious. Know you will have a great time.

If an unwanted thought appears, consciously tell yourself to STOP! Once you have firmly told the thought to stop you then use your handy little list to redirect your mind to a more positive state.

This may sound too simple to some but engaging your mind in actively combating your negative or detrimental thoughts actually works. The key, to success is practice. Practicing this process will not only improve your ability to engage in positive thoughts but it will also give you greater self confidence that you can survive anxiety ridden situations. Confidence is half the battle in dealing with anxiety.

Best regards

Some helpful advice about Agoraphobia

No related posts.

Agoraphobia has been described as the fear of open spaces. It is one of the most restricting conditions associated with a panic attack. Really it is a fear of loss of control. When treated from an early stage, Agoraphobia can be cured easily. However if sufferers leave it too long, other conditions may develop like irritable bowel syndrome and asthma. Many people with Agoraphobia experience a living hell where they restrict the activities they do and the people they mingle with.

The first step towards recovery is to believe there is a cure. Part of treatment is recognizing the causes. Agoraphobia is caused by one or a combination of genetics and biology, life experiences and your temperament. Traumatic life experiences, sometimes results in agoraphobia. It often develop in adolescence or early twenties. The sufferer then obsesses about how to avoid any situation which may trigger a panic attack. Situations are avoided with any excuse.

One helpful piece of advice is to focus on something else. For example if all you do is think about how badly you have to go to the bathroom, you are much more likely to have an accident. If you focus on something else, you can usually hold on until you need to. It is the same with panic attacks. If you focus on not having a panic attack, it is likely you will have one. Instead focus on something completely different. If you need some structured help in getting you through this process there are many programs that are hugely successful in helping people beat agoraphobia. There are

It is also helpful to write down the answers to the following questions and start to look for patterns.

1. When was the first time you had an attack? The second? The third?…
2. How old were you?
3. Where were you?
4. How did you feel before the attack?
5. What were you thinking about before…?
6. How did you feel during…?
7. How did you feel after…?
8. How soon did the symptoms go away?
9. Were there any lasting physical effects?

The reason these questions are important is to understand what the causes and then to also realize that the effects were temporary, the symptoms went away quickly and that there were no long lasting physical effects. A rapid heartbeat or shortness of breath is not going to kill you. You know you can survive so don’t panic about it!

Panic attacks are like that bully at school, they seem big and bad but once you stand up to them, they back down. They only visit if they know you are scared of them. The bully only steals lunch money from the kids that are afraid of him, otherwise it´s too much trouble and he doesn´t want to bother or encounter any resistance.

By providing a little resistance you can beat that panic attack and stop worrying. Your agoraphobia will vanish effortlessly.

Best Wishes

As many of you know I overcome my panic attacks by using Joe Barry’s wonderful program called “Panic Away” and I thoroughly recommend it. It is totally natural, there are no drugs involved and worked fast- for me- 3 days! And I have not had one since!

However different approaches work for different people. A very good friend of mine called Sasha has just has a wonderful new lease of life using The Linden Method.

It took her 19 days to say she felt completely recovered. She had suffered for 6 years and was unable to leave her home due to agoraphobia. She had got into a vicious cycle of fatigue, anti depressants, psychiatrists and avoiding most situations involving other people.

I saw her last week- we went out to lunch (for the first time in years) and she told me she had returned to work and was feeling relaxed and confident. The happiness in her face was so beautiful to see. I truly could not believe the transformation I saw in her.

Charles Linden was a former sufferer like us and went through many years of searching for a solution. He discovered that there is a small organ in the brain called the Amygdala, which is responsible for the symptoms of panic attack.

Charles’ program addresses the dysfunction in the Amygdala which is why it is so effective. I have uploaded quite a moving video Charles has done explaining his initial panic attacks and how his method works for you. Best of all he 100% guarantees his program- if it doesnt work for any reason- you pay absolutely nothing…

His program is used by government, medical professionals and the public. It is a clear, concise method of what to do and what not to do in order to free yourself from your symptoms.

Charles provides outstanding audio, video material and is available on email or over the phone support and advice when YOU need it for up to 1 year-FREE!

His method does not require learning, self hypnosis or exercises. Just read and implement- it is that easy. As well as the full method explained you will also get bonus audio and videos…click here to see the full details:

Guys: if you are still unsure; you get to try it free anyway for 56 days. If for any reason it does not work, simply get a refund! No questions asked! It’s a no brainer! What have you got to lose?

If you are suffering panic attacks or anxiety disorders, I urge you to try “Panic Away” or “The Linden Method” and get started in the next 10 minutes.

Do not leave your life on hold any longer!

And most importantly….don’t forget to let me know how you got on!

In many cases panic attack sufferers are quickly rushed out of the doctor’s office with a bag full of drugs without much thought to the immediate side effects or possible long term damage. Sometimes these just mask the symptoms and do not cure the problem.

What if there is a natural remedy that works?

Anxiety sufferers increasingly are looking to herbs for treatment. Although stronger medications do have a place with some conditions, herbs can be a milder and safer substitution for traditional medications.

These are some you may have heard of:

1. Valerian Root

This herbal supplement is extracted from the Valerian flower plant. It is also as a powerful tranquillizer, and is commonly used to reduce symptoms involving insomnia and epilepsy. Valerian extract works rapidly, often in less than an hour, but it is also known to be mildly addictive.

2. St. John’s Wort

It is used for in anxiety treatment because it contains properties that are capable of combating depression. In some countries, St. John’s Wort is even more often prescribed than traditional medication in treating mild depression. St. John’s Wort is also known as Klamath weed or Goat weed.

3. Kava Kava

This plant comes from the Kava crops in the western pacific and is effective in delivering tranquillity. Although Kava Kava is not addictive, some researchers believe that it may cause violent allergic reactions in a very small number of patients.

4. Others

There are more names to be covered, including passion flower, lemon balms, hops, chamomile, magnesium, B-complex, etc.

Herbs have always been a hot topic for centuries. Many of our medications are in fact based on herbs.

Are herbs really effective?

In treating anxiety, will herbal drugs eventually take place of prescribed drugs?

The fact is that there is no strong scientific evidence that they work but plenty of anecdotal evidence. It is still important to check with your doctor to ensure there are no interactions with standard medications you may be on. In combination with behavioral therapies is still the best way to battle anxiety and panic attacks.

Herbs still carry their obvious advantage over the more powerful drugs for being less addictive and less harmful. Your doctor may even suggest trying some herbal remedies before stronger medication.

Everyone responds differently to different herbs so it is important to try them (if safe to do so) and understand you might have a different response from your friend. When I was suffering severe attacks I found great help from Valerian and ReloraMax.

Are panic disorder/panic attacks treatable?

The resounding answer is YES!

Treatment for panic attacks and panic disorder is very effective.

Treatment options include therapy, medication and healthy living.

There is some evidence that cognitive behavioural therapy plus medication together work faster than one of these treatments alone.

Also people who have had therapy get a better result that lasts for longer than just medication alone.

Cognitive behaviour therapy is used to help people change the way they think about their fear and panic attacks. It also helps people change the way they react and behave towards fearful situations. Patients learn to make the feared object or situation less threatening as they are exposed to, and slowly get used to, whatever their trigger is. Family members and friends can help a great deal in this process. The best and quickest help I have come across is “Panic Away” which is a book and audio CD’s based on cognitive behavioural therapy. This programme will help re programme your mind to the triggers which cause anxiety. There is also one on one support that comes with it so you get the result you need quickly!

Medication is most effective when it is used as part of an overall treatment plan that includes supportive therapy. Antidepressants and antianxiety medications are the most successful medications for this disorder. Ask your doctor about these medications or others that may help you.

Healthy living habits may also help people overcome panic disorder. Exercise, a proper and balanced diet, moderate use of caffeine and alcohol, and learning how to reduce stress are all important. Hypnosis can be a fantastic way to learn how to relax and cope with stress.

Peer support is a vital part of overcoming panic disorder. Do make the effort of locating support groups at your local hospital or community centre.
